About the Artist

Johanne Morin, 2010 As an artist Johanne Morin was a late starter. She finished her first painting a few months short of her 40th birthday. Johanne was born and grew up in Quebec, Canada, dedicating herself to sports before opting for a more stable future. She studied Computer Science in college, receiving her Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Ottawa.

In June, 2000, Johanne moved with her husband to Texas in search of a warmer life. The change of climate inspired a change in calling as she rediscovered her long-lost love of Art. She has taken classes and workshops with local and internationally known artists. Johanne has worked with pastel painting, wood burning and wood sculpture and has won awards in each medium.

Artist's Statement

My pastel paintings are rendered in a representational and impressionistic style. Im compelled by the challenge of simplifying the subject by suggesting the light, color and texture instead of going for the exact representation of whats in front of me. I try to paint from life as much as possible where I can better observe subtleties of shapes and colors. I am naturally attracted to reflections, either the water in landscapes or objects on a smooth surface in still lifes. I strive to move the viewer with each painting.
